Indigenous Community Exploration-Round 3

Indigenous Community is an exploration that studies about some indigenous communities in Cambodia. Specifically, we had learned two indigenous communities which are “Kui” ( Preah Vihear ) and “Stieng” ( Kratie ). In these two communities, We learned about their culture, daily life, the people, their beliefs, education, the ceremonies in their community and more. The goal of this exploration is to promote and preserve their people and cultures to Cambodian as well as to the world. Not only this, but this exploration is also want us to improve interviewing skills, writing skills, designing skill, as well as video skill.  By the end of this exploration, we aimed to have two products finished which are a book for Kui indigenous community and a video for Stieng community. So, we divided into two groups also, some students work on a book of Kui community and some students work on a video of Stieng community.

In order to have these products finished, we had a trip to Kratie and Preah Vihear provinces for 2 nights and three days to do research and seeking for the information. After the trip, we collected all of the information to put into the book and the video. For the students that responsible for the video, they started work on the video, editing, and include the subtitle into the video. For the students that responsible for the book, we started writing in English and Khmer and input it into software for designing a book which is Adobe Indesign. As you know that our exploration has only seven weeks and we had only 2 or 3 weeks left to create this book before Sharation so that we had to rush and what I am really proud to myself and other teammate is that it took us only 1 day to complete the whole book. Moreover, to improve the quality of the book we took another trip to Preah Vihear province for a night to verify the information with the people there.

Finally, By having this exploration I’ve learned about Kui and Stieng Indigenous a lot, including the people, they are very kind and I think I had impacted their community by creating these two products for them.

My Argumentative Essay- Gender Equality

On December 16th, in a restaurant, there are two mens who have different perspective are having a conversation about………  The first men is feeding his children before sending them to school. The second men is eating alone before going to work. If you want to know, let’s investigate together!

The 1st men: Are you feeding your children and send them to school every day? Is this your work?

The 2nd men: Yes! What happen?

The 1st men: This is not your role men! It’s the mother job! You shouldn’t do this.our role is to work in a bigger company and just give money to them.

The 2nd men: Is that matter if  I want to do like this, there’s no rule that this work is only for women.

The 1st men: Oh, you’re dumb! No one gonna want you to be friend because you don’t have any career and you act like a women.

This bespeak that currently there is still gender inequality between men and women. It is evident that throughout history, men and women have struggled with equality. However, they should have the same opportunities in the area of home life, work life and physical activities because everyone has their own right to follow their passion, and if not there will be a high chance of discrimination going on in the society, and the economy won’t grow well.

Home life is an area where men and women don’t get equal opportunities to do all of the work that is related to home which are washing dishes, taking care of babies, doing house work, cooking, and house maintenance. Amongst all these works, there are some specific works for only men and women like Ms. Leah Ruppanner, a Senior Lecturer in Sociology at the University of Melbourne has stated, By contrast, men are more likely to do the episodic chores such as mowing the lawn or changing the light bulbs” (Ms.Leah Ruppanner, page 1). By this, we can know that there is some specific housework for only men and women. And in those houseworks, as I have observed nowadays, most of the men’s tasks are fewer than women’s tasks, however, it requires more energy than women’s task like the above quote says.

However, there are different expectations between men and women. For example, some men really want to do all the things that women did too but because they can only participate when it is  accepted by society. This can make them feel shy, uncomfortable, hurt and that’s why they don’t do it. Again, this can also be considered as violating their rights. This can also be applied to women.

To sum up, it’s very important that women and men have the same opportunities in this area because it will decrease the discrimination in society.  Men and women have different expectations to do the work that they have passion for, so there would not be people against them and violating their rights if the society stop make a judgement on them.

In addition to homelife, currently, men and women don’t get equal opportunities in the area of worklife. For men, their big responsibility in life is working toward a career, so they have to care much about this which might cause them to feel stress, and sometimes they don’t have much time to spend with their family. Especially in Cambodia, women may not have the same opportunities as men because the society thinks that they are not strong, brave or smart enough. Related to this, there are also women who don’t receive the same pay as men for the same job or positions. In fact, an article written in the BBC news entitled, “ points out that men usually earn over 8% more than women per hour (page 1 ). However, this is not men’s fault that makes women earn less than them. So, all these gender stereotypes can’t be stopped if people or women or the society still treat men as the enemy. However, a quote from Ms.Lahle Wolfe, a former writer for The Balance Small Business, says that

“The real enemies behind gender stereotypes are ignorance, intolerance, and stagnant societies that resist change” (Ms.Lahle Wolfe, page 1).

This means that men aren’t  the enemies of gender stereotypes, in contrast the real enemies are the few reasons above which is deep underneath the gender stereotypes which is the society that does not want to change. Also, Ms.Lahle Wolfe, a former writer for The Balance Small Business, had mentioned that

“Like women, men can also be great nurturers, help-meets, and genuinely supportive of the women in their lives – but men still may not see what their partners want as clearly as women often can.”

This quote demonstrates that it’s not men’s fault  that they can’t be the nurturers or help their partners but because they just can’t see what their partners want as women often do. Also, we can say that they have the ability but they don’t have the opportunity to do so. In order to solve this problem, we should encourage women to state their wants or needs clearly. Back to men, if they have more work or more responsibilities, it could lead them to have a health problem. Like a quote from Ms. Tami Forman, a contributor of Forbes news says that,

“The combination of working more hours and feeling more responsible for breadwinning can create an unhealthy level of anxiety and stress for some men” (Tami Forman, Page 1).

For example, there is a men who is a business manager in one company has work really hard until night time, then he could come back home. Everyday, when he return home, his wife always remind and say to him in an unrespected way that you are a men, your role is to work toward a career in order to feed the family. By this, he feel really pressure and he started to feel stress. Many years passed by, he can’t work anymore. So as you are a women, don’t make them feel more responsible and always complaining to them and would it be better? if you can help them to do their work.

Despite the two areas above, Physical activity is also an area where men and women find it hard to participate. In this, as you all know that most of the men already get opportunities to be involved in physical activities or sport, whereas for girls or female, it is not. Although, according to women’s sports foundation, women face many obstacle that make it difficult for them to participate within the cost, lack of access, safety and transportation issues, and more. Moreover, According to professor Marie Murphy, a professor of exercise and health leading the Centre for physical activity and health research,

The results suggested one main reason for women’s lack of participation in recreational and competitive sport: fear. Fear of being judged by others based on their appearance, fear about their ability to take part and fear of judgement for choosing to spend time on themselves rather than on their families” (Marie Murphy, page 1).

This is  one of the main reasons why there is a lack of women who participate in sports because they fear of being judged by other people and the discrimination. Therefore, we should try to motivate them and support them for participate in sport. Sports and physical activities provide many health benefits. According to Taylor and Francis Online, a quote states that, “In fact, the World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that physical inactivity is the world’s fourth leading risk factor for death (World Health Organization, 2010 World Health Organization. (2010). Global recommendations on physical activity for health” (page 1).

This illustrates that the risk factor for death is also cause from physical inactivity.  It improves our health as well as preventing from the developing of several diseases such as diabetes, cancer and cardiovascular disease. In addition to the health benefits, sports also build the important life skills such as teamwork, leadership and confidence.

In conclusion, these are all the reasons and advantages of both men and women should have the same opportunity in the area of homelife, worklife, and will be able to involve in physical activities.

Changing Cambodia- 2017-2018

As you know, Cambodia isn’t a developed country. So, It needs a lot of changes. Changing Cambodia is huge, strenuous, but if you have passion about it, it won’t be that hard. For me, even though, the changes are small or big, it still calls a change and it is what I have thought about since I was young. I want my country looks beautiful and peaceful, no thief, no traffic accident, no violent, no drugs and more.  I believe that I can’t make big changes in Cambodia unless I had made small changes first and I can’t change Cambodia without having “ Education”. Education is very important to me and to everyone. With education comes opportunities. So, if you have a high education you have more abilities to change Cambodia. So let’s learn together to have the education to change your country! Below are what I have done in making changes in Cambodia.

  • First Exploration: Amazing Bamboo:

In this exploration, I learned about bamboo as a sustainable alternative material for building, for food, for medicine…. and I also made many products using bamboo as the main material. It is very fascinating. There are many things that I didn’t know about bamboo, but after this exploration, I learned a lot and now I know that bamboo can be used to make many things, it is a good alternative. One thing that I’m very interested about bamboo is that it is the fastest growing plant in the world and it can grow 90 cm per day. It just the type of grass. And it grows anywhere accept North pole. Also, it can live for a long time that  I couldn’t believe (60 years-120 years). Wow, that is really cool! I shared my knowledge with other people too, I told people what is special about bamboo and The things that can be made using bamboo, now they learned more, now they know more information about bamboo and they know a lot of things that can be made using bamboo, so they can make a job that making things using bamboo, which also develops our economy .

  • Second Exploration: Entrepreneurship:

Making a business is not as easy as I had thought before after learning in Entrepreneurship exploration. everyone has to worry about many things, especially,  about falling. But that’s okay, You won’t succeed, unless you had felt. And if you felt, you have to start thinking of new ideas, try to avoid wasting time. As you can see that many successful entrepreneurs never succeed unless they had felt many times, but when they felt, what did they do? They try to think of new ideas! They don’t waste the time! Because they always think that Time is Money, time is very important, it can’t be replaced. In this exploration, I learned about making a business and I learned many skills that help my business work well. There are 15 students in the exploration and facilitator Keith put us into a group of 3 people and brainstorm the ideas of what business do we want to make that can help to solve the problems in Cambodia. My group focus on the education theme which we want to create something that can help the people to gain more knowledge by using our product. because we want to make a product that can help people to gain more knowledge and also to have fun, so, we decided to make a board game about general knowledge. They can play our board game when they feel bored and while playing it they gain more knowledge too. After we made it, we went to other schools to get feedback and take those feedback to improve our product. Then, we have to set a price for our product because we gonna sell it, but before that, we have to calculate the cost, how much does it cost us to make one of this board game and how much time did we spend to make one board game. So, there are many processes in making a business. Then, we went outside to other schools to sell our products and in total, we sold 5 of our products.  So, after this exploration, I’ve learned and understood more about the entrepreneur and I also made change by creating this board game. At last, I want to say that if one person making one business that helps to solve a problem in our society, and there are millions of people in our country so there will be a lot of changing in Cambodia and our country will become a developed country in one day.

  • Geography Book:

Making the geography book of Cambodia is a huge and arduous project. We need many skills and some core values such as determination, Stewardship, Optimism ingenuity..etc. in order to make this marvelous book. When I was young, I thought that making a book is easy, We only have to write paragraphs and copy the information and combine it into a book. However, after I have learned in this exploration, my thought had changed, I don’t think it is easy anymore because we have to do a lot of things and take a long time to do it. As the author, the most important part is that we have to make sure that the information makes sense to the reader, is it understandable and Does it has the sources and is the sources are reliable?  We have to provide all those information in the book. This year, I have an exploration that called Geography book design team and I also have it since the first year too. There are 8 members of our team. For the first year, I’ve learned about the software that creates the book first, which is Adobe Indesign. There are two seniors that teach us how to use the software because they have used it to make the book, so they know a lot. We’ve learned many skills in Adobe InDesign. When I first saw it, I thought that it’s so messy and it’s hard but after I have learned how to use it, I found that it isn’t as hard as I’ve thought before. For this year, we divided into three geography exploration, which are the content team, the editing team, and the design team. We started designing the book in the software after we got the information done by the two team. The book will have all of the information about 25 provinces in Cambodia. The goal of creating this book is to share with the government students and to other people who interested in learning about Cambodia and the book will be published soon. I put a lot of determination and I’m happy to make this book to share with other people. Finally, I did create change in Cambodia because I am part of creating this book to share will all the students and people to know and learn more about Cambodia, about their own country. Also, I hope this book will help people in their learning and their work.

  • World Story Exchange:

In my first year at Liger, I have a project which is creating a short video to share my story and to inspire people around the world. This short project was lead by two of the visitors that came from another country which are Lindsay and Scott. They come from the United State and they travel to many schools around the world to do this project. I learned many things such as how to make a video, photography skill and writing skill.  In my video, I introduced myself and some activities that I usually do such as handball which is one of my favorite sport, reading, and advertise our traditional dance. Also, I included three messages to inspire people when they watch my video and those messages are Play sports every day make you healthy and strong, In your free time, you can continue to keep learning, and the last one is to keep trying until you are successful. Even Though I didn’t actually go to inspire and encourage or share my life to them in a real conversation but I did it by creating a video, which I think it is really cool and it is not boring too. Finally, I think that this video and all of these inspirational messages will be helpful to people and will be useful in their life.

  • Technovation Challenge  is a 3 months technology entrepreneurship program and competition for young women from all over the world. It is open for girls only that has age between 10 to 18 years old.  It happening once a year. This competition is we have to create a team of two to five people and each team have to create an app that helps to solve the problem in our society that we face. So, in a team, there are some peoples working on coding and some working on the business. I have joined this competition for two years. So, I have more experience.  For the first year, our team creates an app call Pre-health which demonstrates people about lifestyles such as nutrition, activities, and sleep. Pre stand for preventive. After learning and creating an app we have to submit our work to the global judges. Also, we have a pitch in Cambodia which is a national pitch event. It’s a competition just to celebrate Technovation in Cambodia and this we have to present our idea in front of 300-400 people and the judges. The team that will win is a team that has good ideation and good presentation skill and our team won. We are satisfied and so proud of ourselves. We were as happy as we get a million dollar. However, my team didn’t pass to the global. Luckily, one of our school’s team passed to global to San Francisco, United State and they have to compete with other teams from other countries. For the second year, we created an app called Toporist. It is an app that both national and international tourists to find places to visit in Cambodia, especially to know more about the hidden places in Cambodia. Also, we help to promote ancient and old architectures, including attractive places, because we want to develop our country. Unfortunately, my team didn’t any for this year and we were a bit upset, but we’re glad that we also gain more knowledge and experiences from this year. Finally, I think these apps are enough to help people to know more about the lifestyle, what they should do? And What they should eat? And also help tourists to know more about the hidden places in Cambodia and help preserve the ancient and old architectures. It’s also developing Cambodia economy by increasing the number of tourists come to Cambodia.

  • Conclusion:

In conclusion, throughout the past two years, I have made changes in Cambodia, even though those are small changes, but I very appreciate it and I’m so proud of myself.  At first, I want to change Cambodia but I have no idea of how I can change Cambodia but after I have learned all of these explorations and participated in all of these opportunities, those social events, it helps me to learn more and get more ideas of how I can change my country. Overall, all of the changes that I have made are all related to education, so I realized that I can’t change Cambodia without education and I will try all my best to participate in more different events to acquire new experiences for changing Cambodia.

Outdoor Leadership- Exploration

Outdoor leadership exploration is a learning project based on how to survive and lead yourself and others in the outdoor such as finding food, live without shower, uses natural bathroom and how can you rescue people in the emergency . When we started this exploration, we’ve discussed about Nature, What is Nature? And what does nature mean to us personally? After I have discussed about this I understood that there’s no right or wrong answer of what nature really mean and nature doesn’t have only one meaning, there are many different meanings of nature from the different people perspective. Also, I haven’t noticed or observe much about nature or even don’t know its real definition but I knew more and understand deeper than it really meaningful to me and now I can give my own meaning for it.

In addition, we learned about Risk Management and risk management and assessment.  In order to manage the risks, we have to do 4 steps such as identify the risk, assess the risk,  control the risk and review or reflect the risk. Also, rescuing people in emergency such as way to keep them alive, checking for heartbeat, blowing air into the patient mouth and especially doing the chess compression. After learning all of these basic lessons, We took two trips, one is small trip and one more is big trip. For the small trip, we had an overnight trip to Kirirom national park in Kampong Speu. Along the way, at the national park, I noticed that there are many pine trees, which are so straight and they grow in a pattern which look beautiful. We also met a woman riding her motorbike with a lot of stuff such as rice, fish, ices and she couldn’t handle it because it’s too much, so some of us get off the bus to help her and she seem very happy. When we arrived, we walk to the waterfall for 6km and I was tired and carried a heavy backpack which hurt my shoulder but I tried so hard and made it to the waterfall because of the nice view along the way which motivated to continue walking. We camp at the Srah Srang lake where there are nice scenery and weather with all nature surrounded. There are some gazebos along the lake and it’s a relaxing place. When it’s time to cook, we had a problem with the stove which is not working, however we find an alternative way which is creating fire, some of us was trying to find more sticks and some was making fire, so we collaborate with each other so well and luckily we found an old stove under the gazebo near our camp place so we used it as our stove and this is also a good lesson for me and others too because if we don’t have something, we can always use things surround us and  especially nature.

For the big trip, we went to Mondulkiri for four days and 3 nights . We did a lot of activities such as trying to create fire without using the lighter, cook food by ourselves, did many hiking to different places like waterfall, practice rescue people when there is emergency and making campfire at night.

  • This is while we were hiking for 10 kilometers to a waterfall.
Here are some of highlights from the trips:

Trekking Route: One of the trekking route to the waterfall is about 4 km and it’s on the mountain, so we had to walk up and down in the forest and that’s was very slippery. If you don’t be careful , you will be like our friends that has injuries and slide down. It was very hard for me , however i tried all my best not to get any injuries. Also, along the way there are many cool plants that had caught my attention.

Got to see an Elephant: I was very excited to see an elephant at the waterfall and it’s the only elephant that is left because others were died. I’ve seen elephants many times already, but this was my first time touching it and took photo with it and I was very happy while staying with it.

Stem Class- Round 2

In stem class, this round, we basically learned about chemistry related to periodic table, chemical bonding, and starting on chemical reactions lesson. We also did some experiments to see how it works. In periodic table lesson, we studied about:

      • how elements are organized,

        Image From Google
      • The periods and groups
      • The three classic of elements which are metal, metalloid or semifinal and nonmetal.
      • The inventor of the periodic table Dmitri Mendeleev and how he arranged the periodic table and the changes over time.
      • The chemical bonding, which we learned about:
      • The importance of bonding

        Image From Google
      • Covalent bonding:
      • Single covalent
      • Double covalent
      • Triple covalent
      • Polar & nonpolar
      • Ionic bonding
      • Metallic bonding

Overall, this round I’ve gain a lot of knowledge mostly about chemistry, the periodic table and chemical bonding.

Math Class- Round 2

In math class, this round, we continued doing the exercise in the textbook and workbook and did many more activities. Mostly, in this round we learned about Geometry. That’s include the area of all polygons, such as rectangle, square, triangle, the height and base of triangle and also finding the area of the shaded part and the surface area, including cube, prism, rectangular, triangular and more. Along with that, we also did some puzzle about this. Beside, we also learned more about fraction, multiplication and division by whole number and mix number and also word problems. After that, we’ve learned about Ratio which is the last lesson of the textbook. In this lesson, i’ve learned about the fact that i didn’t know before, first i confused that ratio is the exact numbers of the amount of something, but it’s not like that because it can be simply into its simplest form. I found that this lesson is very fun and very helpful in our life. And this is the last round of studying the 5A textbook and we will continue to the next textbook which is 5B in the next round. I’m very excited about this! Also, we learned and did some coding about algebra in the code.org web site. And here what’s it look like!

Multimedia Class- Round 2

This round, I missed most of the multimedia class because I was on trip for my exploration which is my learning project. However, I got to learned about digital storytelling and the types of it such as photo essay, animation, audio, video, statistic or data, documentary and many more. We did an activities related to this which we had assigned group to look at some video and guess what kind of digital storytelling is this and how did the creator tell the story. This was really fun.

Below is a quote about story that the teacher told us and I really love it:

This quote is that it has inspired me and really tell me about how powerful the story is.

We also learned about the Pixar storytelling which I think is a really helpful structure for me to write story. As i am a person who doesn’t like writing, however, I really love writing follow this structure.

This is my Pixar story structure:

Besides that, we learned the basic of videography such as how to use a shotgun microphone, lavalier microphone, trypod, type of shots and how to take a good video. Overall, this was a really great round, and I actually learned a lot, even though I’ve missed some classes.

Stem Class- Round 1

This round in Stem class, the main topic that we are focusing on is Physical science, which is the study about matter and energy that includes chemistry and physics. We had studied about matters, type of matters, physical and chemical change in mater and atoms. Ck 12 is one of the major resource that we used to learn Stem. However, sometimes we learned from video and we usually try to research and learn more from the internet and make a presentation to share with the classmate. The reason that we did this because we could have a better understanding of the concept by not just sitting and listening to the teacher. In Stem class, there are many things that we don’t know and wondering about. So, one thing that I like the most in this class is that I and classmate always asked a lot of questions which I’ve learned more from mine and I actually learned more from their questions. Moreover, I like the way that teacher started class with asking some questions about what we ‘ve learned yesterday just a review of the lesson. I like this idea so much because it makes me feel good and involve and it reminds me of the lessons before class start.

Literacy Class- Round 1

For literacy class, I think it’s a huge and busy class because it covers many sub-subject such as reading, writing, listening and more. For this round, we always did the affirmation every day before class start because we want to get more energetic and to have positive thoughts and attitude. We learn Greek and Latin root words which we got distributed as a paper packet once a week that includes ten words and some exercises about those words. Some of the words

(Google)

I had known before and some are not, but mostly not. We had this every week and had test after learning a packet. From this, I had learned many new vocabularies. we also read many articles and answer the questions about the gods of the days, the black death, Shakespeare and his exhibition, Gandhi, the memories and poison. We read these article from many online websites such as Read work and Newsela and also from books. Moreover, we did some writing about where is water on Earth, personal narrative and cinquain poem which is a poem that doesn’t require to be rhyme and it was really cool. We also did they hyper docs about poison article which is a doc with more resources and activities for learning and in this, I have learned many about story or movie such as about theme, symbolism, story elements, climax, the point of view, and mood/tone. Overall, I had taken away many things in the class such as new vocabulary, some events or history and the biography of the famous people as well as the most memorable people throughout the world and what was their action to make them earn a lot of respect or people can never forget about them. In addition, I am very satisfied with all the resources that the teacher had been working so hard to provide us.
